Why use an ePortfolio

Students learn best when they actively own their learning. Creating an ePortfolio during their learning journey is an opportunity to achieve this goal. An E-portfolio can be defined as a digitized collection and presentation of a student's academic experiences, efforts, progress, and achievements over some time (Lu, 2021). Research on E-portfolios supports its use as a formative and summative assessment tool in higher education (Wuetherick & Dickinson, 2015).
Through an ePortfolio, students apply the COVA elements. They have the freedom to choose their ePortfolio appearance, and they will be able to decide what to post and how to post it. They can set up posts, pages, blogs, learning networks, and build out and share their coursework. It will reveal how they have evolved and transformed through their learning journey.
It is important to mention that this is a process. It takes time for students to learn how to learn and what it means to take ownership and responsibility for their growth and development (Harapnuik, Thibodeaux & Cummings, 2018).
As a graphic designer, I always used a digital portfolio to showcase my work, but I never used it to reflect the learning that I have had during my career. And I've never written a blog. I consider myself a very visual person. It has always been easier for me to express myself with images than write. So, this will be a challenge in which I will need to exercise my growth mindset. But I will keep in mind what Dr. Thibodeaux said when she started her first ePortfolios and felt overwhelmed: "One step at a time."
